About The Redheaded Pharmacist Blog:

The site you are visiting is a BLOG about pharmacy written from the perspective of a retail pharmacist.  Basically I have too much free time, I like to write, I’m opinionated and I work full time in a pharmacy so the natural thing for me to do is start writing about my job and my experiences being a very small part of the huge United States healthcare system.

A little about me personally.  I am a pharmacist working in retail.  I’m in my mid 30s and yes I have red hair.  I was trying to figure out what to call my blog and I am always known as the red headed guy anyway so why not go with it?  So that is what I decided to call this blog.

This blog will basically be my thoughts, opinions, and stories from my experiences working as a pharmacist.  I will also try to write about current events and legislative developments that impact the world of pharmacy.  I have been working full time in retail pharmacy for more than a decade now and have seen a lot.  I’ve been told I should write a book which I considered doing but I like the idea of the interactive nature of a blog better.

I don’t expect to have readers here (other than myself) but if by chance some people do come here and read what I write I welcome them and I encourage them to return in the future.  Comments are welcome so feel free to leave any thoughts or questions.  I enjoy any kind of feedback including post comments or e-mails.  I am also active on a few of the more popular social networking sites which you can find the links to on the main page.  Don’t hesitate to send me a message even if it is just to say hi.

Tentative blog posting schedule (as of Monday March 28th, 2011) will be Mondays and Thursdays.  I will also try to write something occasionally on a Saturday if I have time.  If this changes I’ll update this section to inform everyone of the new posting schedule.  The inaugural post was Dec 9th, 2009.   This is not meant to be a serious blog.  Any similarities between stories you read here and people you know are purely coincidental.  If you actually see patient names on this site you can bet they are  fictitious names I’ve created to protect the privacy of real customers and patients.  This site is 100% HIPAA compliant!

This pharmacy blog is for entertainment purposes only!   Always keep in mind that the words you read here are mere opinions written by one pharmacist with a retail background and bias.  I started this site because I enjoyed reading other pharmacy related blogs and they inspired me to start this little slice of the internet.   I will continue to write for anyone that enjoys reading my posts so sit back and enjoy and thank you for stopping by my site.

Disclaimer: This blog represents the opinions of the author and the author alone.  It does not represent any pharmacy group or organization.   I also will leave out or change the names of  patients/customers to protect their privacy and comply with government regulations regarding patient privacy rights and personal information.

Welcome to my world,

The Redheaded Pharmacist

For some odd reason, I thought you would be a female pharmacist. Guess cuz I see mostly female pharmacists these days! I am loving your blog, but I think doing it four days per week is going to be a exhausting! I wouldn’t mind once or twice a week to collect thoughts.

You might be on to something Rinty. When I first started this blog I knew I had an ambitious goal to post 4 times a week. That aggressive posting schedule means I’m always thinking about my next post. I am wondering now if I should scale it back a bit. It is a lot to keep up with in addition to my full time job and all my other things that keep me busy. We will see. For now I will see how it goes but if it gets to be too much I may have to decrease my frequency a little. I don’t want to get burned out from writing. It has been fun though and I appreciate all of the positive feedback I’ve received so far. And I am a guy but you are definately playing the odds by guessing that any pharmacist would be a female considering how much they dominate the ranks of the profession right now.

I thought you were female as well having just read the blog on the new law on prescription transfers. I liked that one. I have a healthcare related talk show on local cable and we are doing a segment on that. My angle is about empowering the patient so I will focus on the safety aspect of it and perhaps get into why we seem to place little value on our medications. On another note, you are a little bit negative about yourself. Own it brother! You are a fine writer with something important to say. I am glad to see another pharmacist get opinions out in the open. The public needs to see how caring, competent and concerned we are about their health. All the best to you. I look forward to that book Smile

Thanks for the positive feedback Mary. I really do put a lot of time and effort into this blog and my posts. I just hope that effort translates into likeable posts that engage people or at least gets them to think. And yes, despite a common misconception I am in fact a guy. Maybe I should throw in a post or two about football or something similar every once in a while so everyone will realize I’m not a female. Hey, my last post was about beer! That’s a start right? Laugh

I stubbled on your blog by a Bing search, but I really enjoy all the information and “book marked” the page. I am a new hire with a company as a floater. I think there are advantages and disadvantages to floating, but personally this position fits my needs and lifestyle too. Somehow in the company I work for I am one of the few female pharmacists (odd I know). Keep up with the awesome posts! Smile

Thanks Alicia, I’m glad you enjoy this site. You’re also welcome to follow me on FB or Twitter as well. And my RSS feed is linked on the main page for anyone who wants to subscribe and follow me that way. It’s always nice to get feedback from a reader. No worries about any errors. No matter how many times I proofread and spell check before posting somehow I always miss a few mistakes. Oh well, that’s life I guess!

Hi, I am really happy you keep a polite blog. I mean seriously, it’s so rare nowadays to find a civil blog. I really appreciate it when people avoid cussing and swear words. Thank you for presenting pharmacists in a professional way. I’m a pharmacist and it bothers me when I hear others in my profession swear or use dirty language every five seconds. Yes

Thanks Hebes but I’m no saint. I get frustrated and say and do things I shouldn’t just like the next guy. I have made an effort though to keep this site toned down some. I do appreciate the feedback.

I too am a retail pharmacist, and your observations are ‘right on the money’, pun intended. Thanks for sharing your insight, both informative and free of ‘white wash’.

I am a technician at a retail store. Reading blogs like yours and the other pharmacists, help keep me sane. Great place to vent on a bad day. Thanks!

You should be ashamed. A person is sick. You look at the meds they are rxd. And you judge them. I swear on my life, if I ever so much as caught a glimpse of you rolling your eyes or making a patient feel uncomfortable, you be fired.

    You are a monster.
